The St James Reading Scheme is based on learning to read
through the traditional 'phonic' method, beginning with the
vowels and gradually introducing the consonants. The reading
material is varied, including especially composed stories
involving contemporary children and informative passages on
different topics. Stories derived from scripture and classical
fable lay a foundation in good literature. Vocabulary is developed
in conjunction with the letters and sounds being learnt. Although
designed for use in schools, the Scheme is equally suitable
for parents working with their children at home.
Level 3 comprises seven books in three
volumes.
Volume 1 covers the combined consonants
br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr and tr,
reinforced with the story of St George and the Dragon.
Volume 2 covers bl, cl, fl, gl
and pl, reinforced with the story of Persephone.
Volume 3 covers sl, sm, sn, sw,
as well as words beginning and ending with st
and sp. The stories are The Seal Catcher
and David and Goliath.
In this level the children are encouraged to expand their
vocabulary with the help of many word lists.
The books are in full colour with illustrations by Miranda
Matthews.
