About St James Publishing

Origins and development

St James Publishing started in 1995 with a few photocopied texts produced by teachers in St James Independent Schools for use by themselves and their colleagues. By the 1990s associated schools were growing rapidly throughout the world, creating the need for more and better materials. With the new millennium we began to seek help to raise the production standards of our books and make them more professional. In 2002 we launched our first range of professionally produced educational books.

The core team consists of the manager, who by day is a classics teacher, a full-time administrator who deals with orders and sales, and two general editors who co-ordinate the projects.

From our humble origin, which was a stock cupboard at St James Junior School, we now have our own office in East Sheen, London.

Our aims

Education is not for the mind alone but for the whole being, mind, body and spirit. Much educational material today either leaves out the spirit or confines it to a particular faith. The philosophical foundation of a St James education allows for spiritual matters to be discussed in a way that is unifying rather than divisive. St James in London, and its associated schools across the world, attracts pupils from the Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Moslem communities. Though we aim to provide materials for use by all, they are drawn mostly on Christian and Vedic (Hindu) sources. The Bible and Shakespeare are the main sources of texts in our English books, along with other fine examples of the English language.

We believe that even small children are capable of understanding great truths - more capable than many adults - and though we offer them simple stories, we do not patronize them with infantile ones based on make-believe.

St James Publishing is a registered educational charity and its publications are produced on a non-profit making basis for purchase by pupils/parents. Any profit that may accrue through sales will be used to help fund the publication of further books.
